Are pups from the same litter a problem.
Today I was surprised to hear the claim that a rescue home policy is not to re-home more than one pup from the same litter to the same home. This apparently is due to the amount of pups that get returned.
Ok let’s break this down and look at the real problem. Is there any scientific evidence that shows a genetic challenge to having litter mates? The answer is no, many people have two pups or kittens from the same litter without any problems. There is however another more serious problem that needs to be addressed. That is Lack of Knowledge. The problem is that people take two cute puppy’s not realising that this means twice the work load, food, training and expense.
Rescue homes must take the responsibility to educate people, not make up excuses. Especially when it involves puppy’s. Most good food manufactures give free puppy packs to breeders and rescue homes, and good trainers do free advice sheets. Only then can we get the puppy’s and owners off to a great start.
